Skip-size guide

Which skip size do I need?

The right skip should hold the waste without paying for unnecessary capacity or overloading a smaller container. These figures are practical estimates; exact dimensions, weight limits and available sizes vary by supplier and postcode.

4-yard skip: approximately 30–40 bin bags

Often called a midi skip, this is commonly suited to small bathroom refits, garden tidy-ups and compact household clearances. Its smaller footprint can help where private-space access is limited.

  • Useful for smaller projects
  • Ask about heavy waste before booking
  • Confirm that the delivery vehicle can reach the placement area

6-yard skip: approximately 50–60 bin bags

A popular builder’s skip and a practical all-round choice for many refurbishments, medium clearances and mixed building waste. It can be easier to fill safely than choosing a larger container for dense material.

  • Common for refits and renovation work
  • Suitable waste depends on the booked load type
  • Do not mix restricted items without approval

8-yard skip: approximately 60–80 bin bags

Often called a large builder’s skip, this size can suit larger renovation work, construction waste and bulky clearances. Heavy loads may be restricted even when there is unused space in the container.

  • Useful for larger projects and bulky mixed waste
  • Fill only to the level-load line
  • Check weight limits for soil, rubble and concrete

12-yard skip: approximately 100–120 bin bags

This larger skip is normally better for bulky, lighter material such as packaging, timber, furniture and major clearances. It is not normally the right choice for a full load of soil, rubble or other dense material.

  • Best suited to bulky light waste
  • Not normally suitable for heavy inert loads
  • Check site space and vehicle access

Bag counts are a guide—not a loading limit

Bin bags vary greatly in size and how tightly they are filled. An awkward item can consume more space than several bags, while soil and rubble can reach a safe vehicle weight before the skip looks full. Tell us what the waste consists of, not only how many bags you expect.
